The Eclipse (Pt. I)

August is always a little crazy. The heat was really getting to us. You see, no air conditioning is a big plus. You can squeeze a little more juice out of old girl without wasting power on changing the air temperature. Plus, we’re already some cool motherfuckers. The ride down went pretty smooth. 5 am departure from strat-city. Stack of joints rolled, full tank of gas, and gas station snacks to get us to the next stop. First 5 hours or so went pretty smooth. Snacks, joints, and blasting music through the subwoofer behind the bench seat. Hit traffic around 10 am. Suns gettin high now. Matter of fact, been pretty high ourselves. He turns to me with couple tabs of lsd. “Wanna take some?”. Nah man, I’m not tryin to sit in this traffic, in this hot ass truck, driving for the next 8 hours trippin. A couple of minutes later, we both had a couple tabs in our mouths. No sense sittin in traffic, in a hot ass truck, driving for the next 8 hours not trippin. Soon enough the traffic cleared up and as the sun grew higher, so did we. I could feel the semi-bald tires melting to the tarmac, my hands melting to the steering wheel. The wood-grain steering wheel fitting perfectly inside my sweaty palms. Behind the bench seat, the beat building. Windows down, blowing the smoke from the freshly lit joint onto the maroon colored dashboard. Watching the speedometer climb towards 80 miles per hour. Through the cracks in the windshield we watched the road in front of us grow towards Virginia’s picturesque Appalachian Mountains. I release my two handed grip on the steering wheel, 80 seems to be the speed that’s going to carry this sled through these mountains. Steering with my left hand, smoking with my right, I look out over the edge next to us. If you time it right, the edge is a nice place to be.
